From MBO to HBO, a growth in the number of students
After obtaining an MBO diploma, students have the choice to start on the labor market or to continue studying. For the sixth year in a row, the number of students transferring from MBO to HBO has grown. It is a long-term trend that continues.
In the current academic year 2020/2021, the record number of 40.852 MBO graduates entered HBO, reports MBO Today. This is a growth of no less than 11% compared to the previous academic year. Compared to 2015, a growth of almost 30% can be observed.
The recent growth is related to the corona crisis. In a period of economic downturn, there is often an increase in the flow from MBO to HBO. You also saw this with the credit crisis of 2008. In addition, students with an MBO delay were given the opportunity to be conditionally admitted to higher professional education in the final phase of their education.
Associate Degree training
Students with an MBO-4 diploma can also opt for an associate degree program. This is a two-year vocational college program. This program is becoming increasingly popular among students. In the current academic year, there were 9.500 new enrollments, an increase of about 20% compared to the previous academic year. It is primarily intended for MBO students who still want to study after their education, but who do not want to start a 4-year HBO study immediately. In total there are now about 1800 AD students enrolled at higher professional education institutions.
